NewsAccording to an independent examination of research production on nerve damage caused by diabetes, Qatar is the second most productive nation in the world in terms of population size. Researchers in Qatar produced 18.1 articles per million people (51 articles; 2.83 million people) on diabetic neuropathy, trailing only Denmark in first place with 20.27 articles per million people (117 articles; 5.77 million people), as per a study published in the journal Frontiers in Endocrinology.
The majority of the published research that resulted in Qatar's improved rating were authored by Dr. Rayaz Malik, an assistant dean for clinical investigations at WCM-Q and a professor of medicine. The report was released by academics from Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany and the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom under the title "The landscape of global research on diabetic neuropathy."
The study also revealed that, in terms of GDP, Qatar ranked third among nations conducting research on diabetic neuropathy, behind Denmark (first) and the United Kingdom (second), and ahead of major scientific powers like the United States (ranked 14th), Germany (ranked 11th), Switzerland (10th), Canada (8th), and the Netherlands (6th). The study also demonstrated the robust international partnership that Dr. Malik forged between the United Kingdom, one of the world's foremost diabetes research nations, and Qatar.
Corneal Confocal Microscopy (CCM) is a rapid, non-invasive ophthalmic imaging technique that has been used for the first time to diagnose and predict the progression of multiple neurodegenerative diseases in patients with a variety of conditions, including dementia, schizophrenia, autism, long-COVID, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and diabetic neuropathy. Dr. Malik, from WCM-Q, is a practicing consultant physician in endocrinology and diabetes at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
As one of the top experts in the world on diabetic neuropathy, Dr. Rayaz Malik of WCM-Q has contributed to the development of Qatar as a centre of excellence for diabetic neuropathy research.
