The European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) has awarded the Green and Sustainable Medical Laboratories certification to the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). With this accolade, HMC's labs become the first in the Middle East and outside of Europe to obtain this esteemed certification.
The American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), the Joint Commission International (JCI), and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) are just a few of the international accreditations that HMC's DLMP has previously earned. In line with Qatar's Third National Development Strategy, which places a significant emphasis on a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future, HMC's DLMP sought the Green Labs certification in order to further build on this solid basis.
The Green Labs certification has been granted to all major specialties within HMC's laboratories, including the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, Hematology Laboratories, Anatomic Pathology Laboratory, Immunology Laboratories, Cellular Therapy Laboratories, Diagnostic Genomics Laboratories, and Transfusion Medicine Services, with pride, announced Dr. Einas Al Kuwari, Chairperson of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at HMC.
Water management, waste management, energy efficiency, and hazardous chemical control were among the requirements for Green Labs accreditation. A multidisciplinary team including of representatives from several HMC operational and support departments, such as engineering, supply chain management, environmental services, hospitality, and planning, was assembled to assist this endeavor. Additionally, a sustainability committee was formed to oversee the initiative's advancement and guarantee continuity.
The main goals of HMC's DLMP's green initiatives are to enhance everyday routines and maximize resource utilization. By receiving this accreditation, HMC has demonstrated that it takes this seriously and is implementing best practices in an open, accountable, and transparent manner.
