A campaign to free newborn hawksbill turtles at Fuwairit Beach, which are in danger of going extinct, was conducted yesterday by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC). The event was attended by H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Environment and Climate Change.
By teaching the next generation about the value of protecting turtles from extinction and increasing environmental consciousness among schoolchildren and the Qatari community, the campaign intended to protect biodiversity in the region. Students from Qatar Foundation schools, Al Khor Model School, and the Children's Literature Centre were among the academics that took part in the campaign.
Throughout the breeding season, the MoECC's efforts contributed to an increase in the turtle population. In the final two weeks of the nesting season, specialist teams relocated over 125 nests to Fuwairit Beach.
Several volunteers, staff members of the Ministry, and locals living close to the turtle nesting sites were recognised by the Environment and Climate Change Minister during the campaign for their efforts to protect turtle lives by reporting nesting activities outside of the approved areas by coordinating with specialised teams.
