Oryx GTL is a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Sasol and represents an investment of approximately $950m. The venture will be the world's first new generation, commercial-scale, gas-to-liquids facility. The plant is located in Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC), a significant industrial development of 100 km2. RLIC contains extensive support infrastructure including a well equipped modern port. Oryx GTL is a grassroots facility able to process 9.3 m3/d of lean natural gas from Qatar's North gas fields to produce 34,000 bbl/d of liquids. The plant was designed to be almost fully standalone, importing only start-up power, cooling water and raw water and discharging effluents within strict environmental limits. The startup and operation of the facility will give market confidence by proven safe reliable operation.
It is a synthetic fuel plant-based in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar, owned by Qatar Petroleum (51%) and Sasol (49%). It uses gas to liquids (GTL) technology for converting natural gas into liquid petroleum products. The capacity of Oryx GTL in 2007 was 34 thousand barrels per day of oil.
