According to Al Sharq, the Iranian news agency, the State of Qatar has signed the largest ever agreement on saffron trade with Iran.
The agreement was signed in a meeting between H.E. Ali Bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, Minister of Finance, Hamid Reza Dehghani, Ambassador of Iran in Doha.
The newly signed deal, worth around US$300 million, paves the way for the export of around 200 tonnes of Iranian saffron to Qatar.
Under the terms of the agreement, the first shipment of Iranian saffron is expected to arrive in Qatar on October 1.
Iran ranks first globally in saffron production, followed by India and Afghanistan. Saffron is called red gold and is the most expensive spice in the world due to the nature of the harvesting and production process.
