Qatar Museums has announced that the iconic Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) will reopen to the public on October 5, 2022, following a facility expansion project and reimagination and reinstallation of the permanent collection galleries.
MIA, one of the world's leading institutions of Islamic art and the region's first world-class museum, will reopen and become more accessible, attractive and educational for the influx of visitors to Doha for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.
More than 1,000 objects – many newly preserved or acquired – will be displayed in the museum's permanent galleries for the first time, alongside masterpieces long recognized by the MIA.
Immediately following the reopening, the MIA will present Baghdad: Eye's Delight, a landmark temporary exhibition from October 26, 2022 to February 25, 2023, that presents and celebrates one of the world's most influential cities. The Abbasid Caliphs (750-1258 CE) and its legacy in the 20th century, when the city once again became a thriving center of art, culture and commerce.
Galleries will be organized according to broad historical and cultural themes, periods and geographies and will explore the great traditions of Islamic craftsmanship. MIA will introduce a new section on Islam in Southeast Asia and focus on the connections between different cultures through exhibits on the trade of goods and the exchange of ideas across the Islamic world and beyond.
