The Alluring Blue Mosque with glass mosaic art and hand-painted ceramics

The Katara Cultural Village is home to the exquisite and stunning Katara Mosque or Blue Mosque of Katara. The Katara Mosque is mostly blue because of the exquisite glass mosaic artwork and the hand-painted ceramic tiles that were created especially for Katara.

Designer Zainab Fadil Oglu drew inspiration for the façade from Istanbul's Dolmabahçe Palace. The entire outer façade is covered in elaborate mosaic designs that range from typical vegetal Islamic style motifs to Arabic calligraphy exhibiting words from holy books. Real 24K gold-leafed glass mosaic tiles are used to create the calligraphic panels. The Katara Mosque's mihrab, minaret, and domes are all adorned with golden accents.

Different architectural styles from Turkey, Syria, Turkmenistan and northern Persia are weaved into the delicate designs of Katara Mosque.

Golden Mosque in Ottoman style glazed with gold chips

Katara's Golden Mosque, constructed in the Ottoman style, is completely glazed in small gold chips. The mosque is a magnificent example of workmanship, with golden mosaic tesserae adorning its outside walls.

The Golden Mosque has a distinct external texture that is evocative of finely sanded surfaces and radiates a gentle glow. These facade-like exteriors, with their exquisite texture and faint sparkle, fascinate the eye as they brilliantly mimic the pristine sands of the desert.

A timeless elegance is exuded in certain spots where pure gold mosaic has been added. Hand-picked glass mosaics and platinum decorations add to its elegance. Every mosaic tile showcases the beauty and influence from ancient traditions.
