Souq Waqif is a marketplace in Doha, in the state of Qatar. The Souq sells traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It is also home to restaurants and Shisha lounges. The original building dates back at least from the 20th Century in a traditional Qatari architectural style. It was renovated in 2006.

If you are looking for a wonderful place to shop, to dine, to explore or simply sitting at one of the many attractive outdoor cafe to watch the world pass by, look nowhere but Souq Waqif in Doha.

Qatar has gained the fame as perfect holiday destination as it is the perfect blend of recreational activities. Apart from the historical sites, eateries and luxurious accommodation, the country is well renowned for the shopping expeditions. Souq Waqif ranks as one of the most famous traditional folk markets in the region and trades various traditional goods in stalls, where owners display and sell them to visitors.

For centuries, this location has been a Souq for Bedouin (nomads who have historically inhabited the Arabian and Syrian Deserts.) to take the wool and animals to trade for daily necessities. With time pass, the Souq started to run down and has almost get to the point of being demolished. Luckily, in 2004, it was decided to preserve this historical site so the entire market area has been renovated and restored according to the traditional Qatari architectural techniques. It’s probably the only traditional Souq left in the Gulf. Besides the main street, don’t forget to explore the labyrinth like alleyways to find more stores. Here, you will find both souvenirs for tourists and shopping for locals – from fabric, spices, and perfume to garden equipment and pets.

Built on the site of Doha’s century old trading market, on the banks of the Wadi Musheireb, Souq Waqif feels like an anachronism, particularly against the backdrop of Doha’s dramatic modernist skyline. With its mud-daubed buildings, the market harkens to a bygone era while remaining a hub of activity, where commerce and gossip collide. Souq Waqif’s winding alleys offer a tableau of traditional street life.
