Ministry of Municipality represented by the Food Security Department has demonstrated its efforts to ensure food security in the country during an event organised by the Ministry to mark World Food Day 2022, which falls on October 16.
Minister of Municipality H E Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Assistant Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs Mansour bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud and a number of senior officials attended the event. The celebration of this year’s World Food Day comes under the theme 'Leave no one behind. Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life’.
During the celebration a recorded speech, given by H E Qu Dongyu Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on the occasion of World Food Day, was played. He addressed the forms of food waste in the world and called for the need to develop solutions to reduce food waste. During his opening speech, Youssef Khalid Al Khulaifi, Director of the Department of Agricultural Affairs at the Ministry of Municipality, stressed that Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Municipality, is keen on the participation of the countries of the world in the celebration of World Food Day. He said that this is in order to shed light on this day to enhance awareness of the importance of everyone’s cooperation to ensure food security and proper nutrition for all. Al Khulaifi noted that this year’s celebration comes amid very difficult global circumstances and challenges, as political crises, economic and climatic conditions, wars and conflicts negatively affect the grain supplies of many countries.He said that this leads to an exacerbation of the food crisis in many countries of the world, in light of climate changes and rising temperatures, which negatively affect agriculture and food production worldwide.
Al Khulaifi said Qatar is making outstanding efforts in the field of supporting and strengthening the food security system, which resulted in winning, a few days ago, to chair the Executive Council of the Islamic Organization for Food Security for a period of three years, which is the culmination of these continuous efforts not only at the regional level, but also at the global and local levels. He said that the Ministry of Municipality also pays continuous attention to the local agricultural sector to achieve food security, by supporting local farms by providing production inputs, such as chemical and organic fertilizers and pesticides for vegetable producers. Al Khulaifi said that the Ministry is also assisting them in marketing their products to ensure that they obtain the best prices and to reduce food wastage and waste.
