NewsThe Ministry of Municipality (MoM)'s Agricultural Research Department is working on many research projects to identify vegetable species that are better in quality and quantity and resistant to the local climate, with the goal of making Qatar self-sufficient in the production of fresh food.
The initiatives' outcomes were encouraging. Many plants demonstrated excellent production in the early phases of a project. For instance, the Ministry of Municipality said in a report yesterday that the quantity of fruits on certain sweet corn, bean, and tomato plants surpassed four fruits.
The creation of new, climate-resistant varieties of beans, tomatoes and sweet corn is one of the achievements of a different effort. Since the project's inception in 2019, the new kinds have advanced to the sixth generation.
Farmers will test these kinds over the course of the following two years, and the types that demonstrate their worth and adapt to the climate in the area will be certified.
The department has implemented several cutting-edge research initiatives to employ nuclear and biotechnology methods to produce agricultural inputs locally.
