The Doha Metro recorded 100 million in ridership, as announced by Qatar Rail on 18 January 2023. Qatar Rail also said that "achieving this milestone confirms the growing confidence in Doha Metro services and the pivotal role the Metro has played in Qatar's integrated public transport system." The Doha Metro has set a new record, transporting 100 million passengers, since the start of its operations in May 2019, to the present day. Qatar Railways Company "Rail" said, in terms of operational performance, the "metro" achieved several records. In its first year, it recorded the largest number of passengers in one day, during the National Day of 2019, which witnessed the transport of 333,000 passengers.
The growing operational performance of the metro confirms the importance of the role it is playing as an effective alternative for the transportation of individuals, citizens, residents and visitors to the State of Qatar, especially in light of its network connection to most major destinations, areas of events, tourist attractions and Hamad International Airport.
The cooperation and continuous support of the partners in the Ministry of Transportation and Mowasalat Company “Karwa” reflects the efforts of “Rail” in terms of promoting integrated transport solutions such as the Metrolink bus service and the metroexpress service, which contribute to enhancing the rates of use of “metro” services in daily commuting, through Providing several access options that facilitate movement to and from the network of stations.
The integration of the "metro" network and its connection with the "Lusail Tram" network through the Legtaifiya interchange station played an important role in providing an integrated and easy transportation experience, allowing customers to move between the two networks and reach the city of Lusail during the tournament, as the connection of the two networks contributed to facilitating the arrival of the Cup fans to various Areas of events held in Lusail City.
During that period, the importance of the Doha Metro emerged as a fundamental pillar in the system of success in hosting and organizing about 13 local, regional and international sports events and championships witnessed by the State of Qatar, including 4 finals for the Emir’s Cup, and 9 regional and international events, as the company adopted unprecedented operational plans to serve the masses of those Tournaments, ensuring the safety of all users while on the network.
In 2019, which witnessed the holding of matches for 3 sports tournaments, namely the final of the Emir’s Cup, the Arabian Gulf Cup (Gulf 24), and the Club World Cup 2019, in addition to the celebration of the National Day, the metro transported more than 1.2 million passengers during these competitions and events.
And in the year 2021, which witnessed the holding of 5 sports tournaments, namely the Club World Cup 2020, the final of the African Super Cup, the preliminary round for the joint Asian qualifiers, and the qualifiers for the Arab Cup, the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2021, the metro transported 2 million and 500 thousand passengers during these Tournaments.
During the past year, which witnessed the holding of the largest football event in the world, the "Metro" was able to gain the confidence of 17 million and 400 thousand passengers who traveled aboard its trains during the championship period, and its services contributed to enhancing their tourism experience throughout their presence in the country.
The metro played a pivotal role in the success of hosting and organizing the world championship, which saw 51 percent of the fans go to the stadiums by using the metro network, as the average number of passengers registered during the tournament was 5 times the usual average for passengers, an increase of 300 percent from normal days.
The various events and sports tournaments hosted by the state in the past years have contributed to refining the operational expertise of the metro, which contributed to improving the transportation experience of customers and supporting the integrated public transport system, as well as strengthening the role of national cadres in the company, training them and providing them with the necessary expertise in operational operations, crowd management, and organizational plans, security and safety, dealing with various operational scenarios, crisis management, and emergencies.
Continuous work efforts and joint coordination with various key partners and stakeholders also contributed to supporting the organizational and operational success of Qatar Rail during these events.
It is noteworthy that the first phase of the trial operation of the "metro" was launched on May 8, 2019, with the operation of 13 stations on the Red Line, starting from Al Qassar station in the north to Al Wakra station in the south, then followed by the operation of the remaining stations of the Red Line and the Gold and Green lines. The operation of all network stations was completed in September 2020. It provides world-class transportation services, and a safe and reliable transportation experience, to its various customers, through its network of stations.
