Hamad International Airport (HIA) celebrates ten years of using Doha to link travelers to new experiences and memories, marking an important milestone. In its ten years of operation, the airport has won three times as the "World's Best Airport" at the SKYTRAX World Airport Awards. According to Airport Council International's Air Connectivity Ranking 2023, the airport offers the second-best air connectivity in the Middle East.
In all, HIA welcomed 325.1 million passengers to its expanding facility between May 2014 and May 2024. In a decade, the airport handled 258 million bags, moved 20.5 million tons of cargo, and saw 2.1 million aircraft movements. Currently, over 45 airline partners, including 14 legacy carriers, are served by Qatar Airways' hub.
Following Phase A of the expansion in 2022, the airport's capacity increased to 58 million people annually, and it currently serves over 200 destinations, including those for passengers, cargo, and chartered flights.
In celebration of HIA's tenth anniversary, the airline's staff and customers joined forces for a number of activations that included live music events and cultural shows.
Travelers with special needs and limited mobility can now enjoy more equal customer experiences at Hamad International Airport thanks to upgraded services and amenities. In addition to a newly renovated Animal Relief Area for travelers traveling with service animals or emotional support animals, the airport offers shuttle services to help people move around. Muzn Lounge is a particular sensory area. A number of navigation solutions were implemented by Hamad International Airport and placed at key touchpoints across the large terminal. Through the use of over 65 QR codes and the installation of 40 digital devices, travelers may effortlessly find their gate and preferred shopping or dining establishment at the airport.
The Oryx Airport Hotel at Hamad International Airport has 100 rooms available for travelers staying for brief periods of time in between flights. The hotel near the airport is home to the renowned Vitality Wellbeing and Fitness Centre, which boasts a state-of-the-art gym, a renowned 25-meter swimming pool, spa services, a squash court, and a golf simulator. Additionally, there are 19 lounges for travelers to pick from.
According to the SKYTRAX World Airport Awards, the airport that offers the best shopping experience in the world is the second-best in the world. Its retail and food and beverage offerings include several firsts for the industry, such as the first-ever luxury beauty retreat, the Dior Spa, the only Thom Browne's store, an Oreo café, and the Harrods Tea Room. The airport has several duty-free shops in addition to flagship stores for luxury brands including Gucci, Burberry, Tiffany, and Bvlgari.
The airport's sewage is entirely cleaned by HIA's specialized wastewater treatment plant, which also strives to keep processed sewage effluent from being utilized for landscape irrigation. This means that no potable water is used for irrigation, and no wastewater is dumped into the ocean.
In order to further minimize energy use, the airport has also put in place a number of environmental controls and initiatives, including as smart metering, LED lighting, and cooling system optimization. The airport's ACI ACA Level-3 Airport Carbon Accreditation and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems accreditation are the results of these efforts.
