Qatar’s second clean energy plan is expected to be launched in September to ensure sustainability and address climate change

Qatar's second clean energy plan, designed to assure sustainability and combat climate change, is set to be unveiled in September of this year.  Minister of Transport H E Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti mentioned that during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, 25% of public transportation was used in Qatar which was environmentally friendly. The huge sporting event has left a legacy for Qatar's transportation system. Qatar's public transportation system will be changed to all-electric because of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 legacy.

Qatar now boasts an excellent sustainable transportation system that includes eco-friendly buses. Aside from public transit buses, Mowasalat (Karwa) has deployed over 2,500 eco-friendly school buses, transporting over 60,000 pupils every day.

With a capacity of 478 vehicles, the Lusail Bus Depot achieved a Guinness World Record as the largest electric bus depot. Lusail Bus Depot relies on solar energy for charging because it has 11,000 PV solar panels that generate 4 megawatts of power daily to power its buildings, which is in line with Qatar's National Environment and Climate Change Strategy (QNE) goals and contributes to the leadership's vision and Qatar National Vision 2030 goals.

The depot, which is part of the Ministry of Transportation's Public Bus Infrastructure Programme, has eight bus terminals and four depots, as well as more than 650 electric charging devices for e-bus operations.

The Al Kharsaah Solar PV Power Plant (KSPP) represents a significant step forward in diversifying the country's power production sources. The KSPP is the first solar power plant in the country, and it will be followed by a 410 megawatt power plant in Mesaieed and a 470 megawatt power plant in Ras Laffan. The construction of KSPP is part of QatarEnergy's revised Sustainability Strategy, which reaffirms the company's commitment as a major energy producer to responsible production of clean and inexpensive energy to aid in the energy transition.

In addition to growing solar capacity to more than 5 GW, the strategy aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement carbon capture and storage technology in Qatar to absorb more than 11 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2035. The policy also intends to lower the carbon intensity of LNG facilities, reinforcing Qatar's commitment to sustainably deliver cleaner LNG on a large scale to facilitate the energy transition.
