NewsThrough its exploratory research project, HyPEC, the Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre (QSRTC) has accomplished a major milestone in the generation of green hydrogen.
The goal of the HyPEC project, which stands for Hybrid Photo-electro Chemical Production, is to turn wastewater into green hydrogen. Hydrogen created by renewable energy sources, such solar or wind, is known as "green hydrogen."
The National Chemical Laboratories in India is an external academic collaborator on the project, which is a partnership between QSRTC, Texas A&M University in Qatar, and the local academic partner. There is funding for the study coming from the Qatar National Research Fund award.
After preliminary testing and proof-of-concept were completed in academic laboratories, a prototype chemical reactor was successfully installed in Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). The pilot project successfully generated green hydrogen from wastewater and sunshine after completing the required safety evaluations.
Currently in its pilot stage, the HyPEC project is actively creating green hydrogen. With this accomplishment, the technology has significantly increased in scope and is in line with Qatar Vision 2030.
