News Lusail Super CupSaudi Arabia's Al Hilal defeated Egypt's Zamalek 4-1 in a penalty shootout to win the Lusail Super Cup as Qatar showed its willingness to host the FIFA World Cup at the Lusail Stadium on Friday.
Goalkeeper Abdullah Al Moyouf was the hero for the AFC Champions League winners, Mahmoud El Wensch blocking a shot after Ahmed Siso's first-time effort came back off the post. All four Al Hilal players scored and Andre Carrillo scored the winner after the teams were level at 1-1 in stoppage time.
The Lucille Super Cup set the record for the largest attendance at a football match in Qatar, with 77,575 spectators at the 80,000-capacity venue. The record was previously held by the FIFA Arab Cup match between Qatar and the UAE, which drew 63,439 spectators at the Al Bait Stadium – also the venue for Qatar 2022.
The Lusail Stadium, where the FIFA World Cup final will be held on December 18, is Qatar's biggest venue and will host 10 matches in the tournament.
The successful debut of the competition between Asia and Africa's giants marks another major milestone for Qatar ahead of the World Cup - the first edition of the tournament to be staged in the Middle East and Arab world - which kicks off on November 20.
Ahead of kick-off, Egyptian superstar Amar Diab entertained the fans with his performance, setting the stage for the thriller. Al Hilal, coached by Argentine Ramon Diaz, took control of the match.
Moussa Marega gave the Egyptian champions a scare when he took a shot on target from a free-kick, but goalkeeper Mohamed Awad thwarted the effort with a superb diving save.
Al Hilal were rewarded for their dominant start, with Nigerian Odion Ighalo taking the lead in the 18th minute when he broke past Awad to take an aerial pass from Gustavo Cuellar.
