‘Ashghal’ organised an event on World Environment Day 2023 to promote environmental sustainability in all its projects

The Public Works Authority 'Ashghal' has organised an event on World Environment Day 2023 as part of its efforts to promote environmental sustainability in all of its projects and raise awareness on effective societal participation to protect the environment and preserve resources for future generations.

This occurs at the same time as the Drainage Network Projects Department has finished building stormwater networks as part of the Flood Prevention Scheme in Doha South regions, which attempts to address rainwater buildup in a number of locations, including Al Wakra.

Along with the project crew, more over 100 volunteers and environmental activists took part in the event as they cleared Al Wakra beach of trash and dangerous plastics. In addition to levelling the beach ground and extending a layer of clean sand, the project team took part in the event's removal of construction debris, temporary pumping systems, and pipes that were employed during the wet season.

The authority honoured the attendees as well as the Flood Prevention Scheme Project's work team on behalf of Ashghal, the primary implementation contractor, Hamad Bin Khaled Contracting Company, and the consultant firm supervising the project, Parsons International Limited, in recognition of their contribution to environmental protection and community involvement in Al Ain. The authority was represented by Al Khayareen, Drainage Networks Projects Department Manager at Ashghal.

Regarding the Flood Prevention Scheme project, Eng. Khalid Al-Qatami, Assistant Manager of the Drainage Networks Projects Department, stated that the third phase of the project's implementation started in April 2020 with the intention of offering workable solutions to the issues of stormwater accumulation in more than 35 areas north and south of Doha, including the Al-Wakra area, which will contribute to meeting the needs of the population and improving the quality of life and environment.

Al-Qatami clarified that the Al-Wakra area's vital sites, including the Al-Wakra Main Road, the areas surrounding Al Janoub Stadium, the Al-Wakra General Hospital, some residential areas, as well as the old Al-Wakra Souq and its surroundings, were all taken into consideration during the design process.

According to him, the underground tank has a 40,000 cubic metre capacity. Al Qatami said that the primary stormwater drainage networks, which total 75 km in length and include 19 km in Al-Wakra, had been finished. These networks, he continued, include 108 flood control locations in Doha's north and south.
