Qatar Aviation Services (QAS), in collaboration with MATAR and Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), has announced a plan to test the newest autonomous mobility technologies at Hamad International Airport (HIA) as part of its airside operations, setting a regional first.
UISEE, the QSTP-based company creating these autonomous vehicles, is at the heart of this effort. Being the premier center for applied research and technology development in Qatar, QSTP is essential to advancing technological innovation and making it possible for ground-breaking solutions like the Eye of the Pearl to solve pressing problems.
The operation of emergency vehicles, such ambulances, on the tarmac during a sandstorm is one of the main scenarios under study; this scenario is made even more difficult by the existence of autonomous buses and other vehicles.
The airport is now testing two self-driving cars.
The first is the "luggage lorry," which was used to move bags from airplanes to the cargo area using human drivers.
The Eye of the Pearl technology has now completely automated this process, increasing operational dependability and efficiency.
The "passenger vehicle," which is the second vehicle, is made to carry people. Even in the difficult circumstances of sandstorms, it uses cutting-edge radar technologies to guarantee safe and continuous operation.
