Kahramaa, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation in coordination with Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) launched the ‘Best Innovative Initiative in Sustainability’ competition yesterday related to the hosting of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The contest is open for all nationalities and consists of three categories - ‘Visual Short Reel’, ‘Scientific Research Project’ and ‘Sustainability Enhancing App’.
The deadline for submitting the entry is November 30, 2022 and the winners will be named on December 15, 2022. The contestants can send the entry through email cirincubator@km.qa.
The contest, run by Kahramaa’s Creativity, Innovation and Scientific Research Incubator (CIRINCUBATOR) and SC’s Sustainability and Environment Department, aims at developing an innovative initiative that reflects the efforts of Qatar for sustainability in hosting the mega sporting event.
Details about the competition was given by officials from Kahramaa and SC during a joint press conference held yesterday at Kahramaa headquarters.
Sustainability Director at SC Bodour Al Meer said: “We in coordination with FIFA had launched sustainability strategy for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 focusing on five points - environment, economy, social, humanity and governance.” She said that the the strategy set over 20 goals and 70 initiatives. “The environmental point of the strategy, which is related to our department, has five focused areas including hosting carbon neutral World Cup. To achieve this goal, public and private sectors were involved seeking their roles in reducing the carbon footprint.”
She said that all stadiums of World Cup are sustainable, environmentally friendly and electricity and water efficient over 40 percent and 47 percent respectively. “As many as 25 percent of buses of public transit will be electric and eco-friendly to reduce the carbon emission,” said Al Meer listing a number of other measures to host the most sustainable FIFA World Cup.
Head of Kahramaa’s CIRINCUBATOR, Eng Rashid Hussein Al Rahimi said that the work should consist of individual’s innovation and personal creativity. He said that the competition will have three categories. “For ‘Visual Short Reel’ category, the entry video shall not be exceed 60 seconds and should be high quality and fit for public display. "The entry for ‘Scientific Research Project’ category to be designed and proofed practically not theoretically. A group of 4-6 students as maximum can take part in this category,” said Al Rahimi. He said that category ‘Sustainability Enhancing App’ should focus on energy efficiency, recycling, GHG control, carbon emission calculation and consumption compression.
Manager of Public Relation and Communication at Kahramaa, Mohammed Ali Al Muhannadi, said that this initiative comes to reflect the great interest of Kahramaa in creativity, innovation and scientific research, especially with regard to sustainability, following Qatar National Vision 2030.
Sustainability Specialist at SC, Eng Majed Al Mansoori said the competition is very important in creating awareness about sustainability at this time ahead of the World Cup which focuses greatly on sustainability. “We at Sustainability Department are working to build culture of sustainability in the country, utilising the World Cup in the best way,” said Al Mansoori.
