MECC organised a symposium to announce the innovation of green cement made from sewage waste

A symposium was held by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) to introduce the novel concept of green cement, which is manufactured from sewage waste while adhering to sustainability and environmental regulations. The initiative intends to help the circular economy and advance environmental sustainability.

Ministers of Education and Higher Education H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Environment and Climate Change H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, and Municipality H E Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah were present at the ceremony.

Speaking during the symposium, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change commended the scientific research team's work in cleaning sewage waste and turning it into green cement that is sustainable for the environment and in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030.

In addition to encouraging scholars to perform meaningful scientific research, the Minister stated that MECC is interested in applied scientific research that tackles the issues facing the environment, climate, wildlife, and sustainability sectors.

In practice, green cement is used in the production of foam concrete and building blocks from recycled materials. It is created by burning, grinding and combining sludge, which is the result of solid sewage waste, with catalysts.

This invention helps to prevent the harmful effects of sludge on the environment, lower the carbon footprint, and shield groundwater, soil, and air quality from pollution.

The circular economy, which attempts to decrease waste of resources, products, and energy and promote their sustainable usage, is supported by the MECC, and this invention is the outcome of their efforts to improve environmental sustainability. This effort aligns with the Third National Development Strategy (2024–2030), which supports QNV 2030 and focusses on rationalising resource use, safeguarding ecosystems, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and building capacity and resilience to face environmental threats in the future. It also aligns with the fourth axis of Qatar's Environment and Climate Change Strategy.
