NewsThe Al Azzm sculpture, which is part of the public artwork collection of the Qatar Foundation, was officially opened by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the chairperson of the Qatar Foundation (QF), in Education City on Thursday. Al Azzm, designed to celebrate QF’s 25th anniversary, is located near the QF Headquarters.
The event featured a number of performances and speeches in addition to the official plaque that provided information about the sculpture and artist being unveiled by QF Vice Chairperson and CEO HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani. The artwork was made by HE Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani, QF's advisor for cultural affairs, and it represents the tenacity of the ladies in the community. With their arms crossed and their abayas billowing behind them, they are seen walking against the wind.
The sculpture represents the resilience and power of women, but it also captures the customs and cultures of Qatar and the will of the people to overcome obstacles. The three women chosen also represent the three main areas of attention for QF: community development, education, and science and research.
Sheikh Hassan has also designed other artwork that is on display at Education City, such as The Door to the Future, which is passed through annually by students from QF's higher education institutions during Convocation.
The Malwiya sculpture, on the other hand, is modelled after the impression of Tawila Al-Hasa coinage, which was used in the Gulf and other nearby nations connected by trade connections between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. It bears the name of the place where it was struck.
