Qatar Duty Free unveiled an experiential mixed retail and dining concept – Souq Al Matar

The experiential mixed retail and dining concept, Souq Al Matar, was unveiled at a grand opening event attended by QDF's leadership, VIPs, international and local media, and KOLs. Qatar Duty-Free (QDF) is the owner and operator of all retail and catering outlets at Hamad International Airport in Doha.

Seven stores and two eateries may be found in the traditional Qatari souq, Souq Al Matar (the Arabic word for "airport"), which is housed in the HIA North Node terminal. World-class architectural projects like the Al Thumama Stadium in Qatar have been delivered by the award-winning architect Ibrahim M. Jaidah, with whom the design was developed in partnership.

Souq Al Matar recreates the vibrant energy and allure of Qatar's famous traditional marketplaces, offering a "sense of place" experience. An immersive and culturally significant Souq experience is provided by the wicker braided ceilings, arched doors, wooden-framed windows, and a plethora of other ornamental elements. In keeping with the theme of celebrating Qatari history, a dhow boat is positioned centre stage to honour the nation's thriving marine industry and its close ties to the markets.

Customers can explore a variety of fascinating cultural experiences showcasing traditional craftsmanship during the first week of the Souq's opening. These experiences include live basket-weaving demonstrations and Sadu weaving, a traditional craft that combines geometric patterns with vibrant colours that hold cultural motifs. Additionally, greeters dressed in traditional Qatari garb will welcome visitors and serve Arabic coffee, or "gahwa," along with dates, as offering these items is a show of hospitality and giving in Qatari culture. In addition, visitors may watch expert tailors making the Bishit, a traditional men's robe, and henna artists painting gorgeous designs on women's hands.

"Sea music" was performed by a Naham ensemble during the first event. Pearl divers used this custom as amusement and motivation on their expeditions. Furthermore, there was an orchestral performance with songs from the past and present written by well-known songwriter and composer Dana Al Fardan from Qatar.

The selection of stores and food establishments in Souq Al Matar accurately captures the items and fare that are often found in the narrow passageways of Qatar's historic marketplaces. There are alternatives for all shopping with two restaurants and seven retailers, making the area welcoming and inclusive to HIA's patrons.
