The 800 MW Al Kharza Solar PV IPP project will soon be inaugurated, marking Qatar's first utility-scale solar power plant. The project will be inaugurated by Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in two weeks.
The solar plant is located 80 km west of Doha and is owned and operated by Total Energies and Marubeni (40% stake) and Siraj Energy (60% stake—Qatar Energy and Qatar Electricity and Water Company).
The 10 square kilometer Al Kharsa Power Plant will be equipped with approximately 2 million half-cut bi-phase solar modules mounted on trackers. Touted as one of the world's largest solar power plants, the project is Qatar's foray into sustainable energy consumption. The 800 MW plant is planned to be constructed in two phases of 400 MW each and be fully operational by the end of this year.
At a press conference chaired by Qatar Energy President and CEO and Minister of State for Energy HE Saad Sheridah Al Kaabi, senior officials confirmed that HH Amir Sheikh Tamim will be present at the inauguration of the plant.
