Qatar's Doha International Airport will reopen next week as it tries to ease pressure ahead of the 2022 World Cup, airlines said. Doha International Airport has been in semi-retirement since 2014 when it was replaced by the nearby Hamad International Airport.
Ahead of the World Cup, which is expected to attract more than a million visitors, the carrier said it will operate Cairo flights from Doha airport this week to Egyptian fans for a club match between Egyptian league champions Zamalek and Saudi champions Al-Hilal.
Kuwait's Jazeera Airways, UAE's Fly Dubai, Oman's Salam Air and Turkey's Pegasus Airlines have also started selling tickets to Doha airport from September 15.
Qatari authorities have not yet officially commented on the return to Doha airport. It is currently mainly used for air services by the Royal Family of Qatar and VIPs with the Air Force.
Hamad International Airport handled three million passengers in June alone and 8.42 million passengers in the second quarter of 2022, up 18 percent from the first three months of the year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.
It is also undergoing expansion that will increase capacity to 58 million passengers annually.
