Following the election of the Board on the fringes of the 42nd session of the General Conference of the Organisation, which is currently taking place in Paris from November 7–22, the State of Qatar was elected to serve on the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for the years 2023–2027. It was the Arab state with the highest percentage of votes cast.
The results of the elections for Electoral Group B were released by UNESCO, and the State of Qatar obtained 167 votes.
The State of Qatar is eager to assist regional and international initiatives aimed at enhancing the Organization's influence in its areas of expertise and tackling shared global concerns, as evidenced by its appointment to the Executive Board.
HE Sheikh Ali bin Jassim Al-Thani, the State of Qatar's ambassador to Paris, stated that the country's nomination and election to the UNESCO Executive Board represents its commitment to advancing global understanding and serving as a resource for all member states in order to advance the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.
In a press release, HE emphasised that this victory also reflects the confidence of the international community, as represented by UNESCO member states, in the State of Qatar's ability to support education and culture as vital components of global stability, particularly in the Arab region.
The Programme and External Relations Commission, the Finance and Administrative Commission, the Special Committee, the Committee on Conventions and Recommendations, and the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee are the five committees and sub-bodies that the Executive Board operates via.
With 56 members, the Executive Board is regarded as the cornerstone of UNESCO when it comes to making decisions and monitoring the process of putting forth UN resolutions in the areas of culture, education, social and human sciences, communication, and information.
