As part of the planned renovations to Al Wakra Port, the Ministry of Municipality is ready to start operations, providing moorings, service buildings, lights and other amenities to the port. The port has 368 moorings, 188 boat stands and 180 boat docks.
These facilities will be provided to licensed fishing boats and cruise boats between 22ft and 46ft in length, according to local Arabic daily Arrayah.
Boats of all sizes can be parked at the port, and all services needed by fishermen and ship owners can be found there – floating docks with water, electricity and lighting services. Additionally, there are service facilities and navigational aids that comply with the latest international standards and guidelines.
Besides strengthening economic development, the project also improves port efficiency and sustainability, facilitates unloading and towing operations for marine cruisers, and protects private property.
There are firefighting systems, a CCTV camera, boat landing chutes, refueling stations, administrative offices for sea travelers and fishermen.
Several fishermen and boat owners at Al Wakra spoke highly of the port project, noting that it provides safe parking for boats, especially after the mooring stations had become overcrowded. The new port directly supports the fishing and leisure cruise sectors, they noted.
An estimated 1,000 mooring berths will be provided and modern anchoring spaces will be regulated for private boats. Moreover, the berths will protect boats from high waves and storms. Boosting Qatar's economic development will be made possible by the port's support for the private sector.
Among the most important aspects of the project are its optimization of Qatar's harbors and establishments for cost reduction, adherence to environmental and sustainability standards, and application of world-best practices for project design and implementation. A future expansion of mooring berths is being planned by the authorities.
