Seven new recycling factories to start operations soon in Al Afja area for Recycling Industries

In an effort to further the nation's recycling and sustainability initiatives, seven new recycling factories are anticipated to open shortly in the Al Afja region for Recycling Industries.

Al Ajfa is being built as a centre for the recycling sector in Mesaieed Industrial Area, some 40 km south of Doha, in order to satisfy Qatar's ambitious aspirations for sustainability and the circular economy.

In the Al Afja region, 11 recycling facilities are currently in operation. Approximately seven factories are anticipated to open soon. According to Minister of Municipality H E Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, up to 12 industries are now under development.

The Minister recently stated at an event that 252 plots of land were awarded in Al Afja, out of which 53 plots are designated for recycling enterprises.

"The Ministry of Municipality has prepared plans for the development of Al Afja area in phases," the Minister stated. He said that Qatar built the Al Afja area for Recycling Industries to foster collaboration between the public and commercial sectors in an effort to boost the circular economy.

According to the Minister, among the permitted operations in Al Afja are the recycling of oil, medical waste, wood, metal, electronics, plastic, tyres, and batteries, as well as the segregation and recycling of building waste and the production of organic cement, as well as the recycling of glass and fabric.

He said that the Al Afja area is significant because of its location in Mesaieed, close to the Waste Management Centre and Landfill. The Minister also emphasised the significance of the private sector's participation in carrying out the projects while government organisations oversee them.

According to him, the private sector would play a significant part in the growth of the country's recycling industry in Al Afjah. In line with Qatar's National Vision 2030, the country has made a concerted effort to strike a balance between the various aspects of sustainable development, which serves as a comprehensive framework for enhancing the best possible use of waste with the involvement of all societal institutions and groups on both the public and private levels.
