The test operation of Al Rayan Depot is one step towards implementing the strategy developed jointly by the Ministry of Transport and the entities concerned to transition from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric ones.
This is one of four public bus depots. This announcement coincides with the implementation of the Public Bus Infrastructure Program, which supports the Ministry's endeavor to establish a safe and financially sustainable public transport network in Qatar that not only covers all urban regions but also forms a coherent network such as the public bus system, the Doha Metro network and the Lusail Tram.
As for the three other depots in Lusail, Al Wakra, and New Industrial Area, they are expected to be completed in Q3 of 2022 and will include all necessary services and living facilities.
As part of the test operation of Al Rayan Depot, electric buses will be operated and a charging zone will be set up to conduct stress tests on the electric charging system in general along with drivers being trained in electric buses and service routes by Mowasalat (Karwa).
Buses from this depot will serve Gharraffa, West Bay, Lusail City, and areas in northern Doha.
Working Zone and Living Zone are the two main zones of Al Rayan Depot. Working Zone offers 380 fully shaded bus parking spots, with nearly 190 electric charging stations that can power two buses each. A maintenance workshop is also included, which has several vehicle care units and the latest tools and equipment as per requirements from the bus-supplying company.
