News EventThe public was given access to the Miniatures Exhibition by Al Mana Maples, which has 100 classical chairs in exact 1:6 tiny copies, yesterday at the Doha Design District in Msheireb Downtown Doha. The centre of this show is a sizable collection of 100 miniature chairs that range in age from as early as 1836 to the end of the 20th century and are each painstakingly made to scale.
The continuing "Masterpieces of Furniture Design" exhibition in collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum, which is located at M7, also in Msheireb, is well complemented by this satellite show.
In her introductory comments, Shaikha Al Sulaiti, Senior Manager of Interior Design at Msheireb Properties, discussed how the 1:6 scale replicas offer an insight into the function of design in the industrial manufacturing process. The display will be on view until October 16.
Emad Al Shoubaki, the general manager of Al Mana Maples, gave instructions on how to enjoy the exhibition to the most. He said that tourists should start their trip with the Bopparder Stuhl from 1836, the earliest tiny reproduction, and proceed in a zigzag pattern until they reach the grand finale, Philippe Starck's Louis 20.
The Boppard chair by Thonet, made in Boppard between 1836 and 1840, is a historical illustration of early wood-bending methods. It is a Biedermeier chair with an upholstered seat that has layer-glued bent wood and walnut veneer. The five layers in the lateral frame's five different thicknesses, which were altered to suit static requirements, are highlighted by Museum Boppard.
With works like "The Shaker Community" from 1840, Michael Thonet's "No. 14" from 1859–1860, a "Anonymous" chair from 1870, and Achille Castiglioni's "Mezzadro" from 1957, to mention a few, the Miniatures Exhibition also takes visitors on a voyage through time.
